STYLE GUIDES
PREPARING FOR YOUR SESSION
The most important rule for being my client is, once we start shooting, pretend I am not there. Do not feel pressured to be camera ready! I am a candid, documentary and real- life photographer. My art is in all things organic and natural. You don’t need to practice putting your hand on your hip and smiling for the camera. All you need to do is pretend I’m not there and enjoy the peace within nature that you get to experience with your partner and family. I will give you gentle guidance for natural poses and prompts that will yield natural interactions with your family for real, organic images to cherish forever.
WHAT TO WEAR
In my experience, what you wear for a session is a huge contribution to the aesthetic that your images have! I recommend wearing neutral tones such as beige, ivory or black. I recommend avoiding the color white because there are so many different types of white. Attempting to match them will usually lead you to have one very stark white shirt next to a yellow/white shirt or a blue/white shirt and will end up looking more mismatched than it would have been if you had just all worn completely different colors.
Muted colors such as wine, burgundy, eggplant and olive green look great in most outdoor lighting environments as well. I highly recommend avoiding neon or bright colors and loud patterns such as stripes or chevron.
Dress COMFORTABLY!
Comfortable and casual are two different things. I don't mean wear sweat pants and tennis shoes- I mean dress comfortably. Don't wear an outfit that you wouldn't usually wear that will cause you to feel uncomfortable and distracted with constantly trying to adjust it or fix it or stand just right in it. I want you to be physically and mentally comfortable when we are spending time together. If your attire doesn't match your mindset, you won't be able to escape the worry about how you look. Don't wear an outfit that won't allow you to move organically and freely. If you can only stand completely still and upright and won't be able to bend or sit down without busting a seam or having a wardrobe malfunction, maybe that little black cocktail dress isn't the best fit for this type of session.
Cover your children.
Remember that children will move and play a ton throughout a session. I recommend putting them in outfits that will cover any areas of their body that you wouldn't want showing on your walls or on my portfolio such as their diaper or underwear. If you are going to put a young child in a dress, also put them in a pair of matching bloomers or shorts to cover their undergarments. At some point or another, they're going to fall or swing into your arms and some undies or a diaper is bound to pop out.
Remember! I am a photographer, not a magician.
While dressing comfortably, remember to dress in a way that you feel is flattering for you and your family. I do not make unnatural body modifications in post production. Can I smooth out wrinkles, erase some blemishes, fix your flyaways? Absolutely! Did I catch you at an unflattering angle? For sure I can help with that NATURAL double chin that we all have if we turn our head the right way! I cannot, however, make you look a different size or a different age. I will work with you with so much love to guide and lead you into poses that are the most flattering for you and your family but I cannot make you look like a different person than the one you show up as.
